5 Things You Didn't Know About Wrinkles

There’s a multi-billion dollar industry that supports our quest for smooth, wrinkle-free skin, and  BOTOX has become a household name.

Wrinkles are a mystery to many of us. Here are 5 things you probably didn’t know about these unsightly creases in the skin:

1. Suntanning accelerates the development of wrinkles. Contrary to what many people believe, tanning does not make you healthier. Long term sun exposure has been proven by dermatologists to be one of the biggest causes of wrinkles. This is because UV rays have a damaging effect on the skin, destroying collagen and elastin (proteins that are the building blocks of healthy skin) as well as robbing the skin of moisture that keeps it supple and elastic. The cumulative effects of years of suntanning cause rapid development of wrinkles and other signs of aging.

2. Dry skin wrinkles more easily than oily skin. If you’ve got a gleaming t-zone and are constantly trying to keep your oily skin under control, at least there’s one piece of good news: you probably won’t have as many wrinkles as someone with dry skin. Natural oils (sebum) serve to protect the skin from environmental damage and keep it supple, both of which keep wrinkles at bay.

3. Eating too much sugar can cause wrinkles. Unfortunately, this is a fact that has been proven by scientists. When you eat sugar, it kickstarts a process that ends in the development of a molecule called Advanced Glycation End Products. AGEs damage biomolecules, and the most important of these when it comes to skin are collagen and elastin.

4. You can’t fight wrinkles by drinking water alone. Although we all say to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, this consumption doesn’t directly moisturize the skin, smoothing away wrinkles. Drinking water is just a healthy habit that keeps our body’s physiological processes operating optimally and helps us flush away waste products that can contribute to the development of wrinkles.

If you want to complement your diet with wrinkle-fighting foods and beverages, look for flaxseed, walnuts, fatty fish and borage oil. All of these contain essential fatty acids that can help keep skin supple.

5. Women get wrinkles around their mouths faster than men. A Netherlands doctor found that women developed deeper wrinkles faster than men because of fewer oil glands, fewer blood vessels and muscles that are located closer to the skin (which means that there’s less padding between the two tissues, facilitating the development of dynamic wrinkles).

We’ve turned to all types of treatments to keep our skin flawless, but like any problem, the best solution is  prevention. Follow a healthy lifestyle, get your beauty sleep and protect your skin from the sun!
